Fluid retention and heavy legs in summer: what helps

Why heat makes legs feel heavy and swollen, simple daily habits that help, when to see a doctor and how a fluid retention treatment in Palma can support you.

Fluid retention and heavy legs in summer: what helps

Heavy, puffy legs in summer are usually a sign that fluid is pooling in the tissues, something heat makes much more likely because blood vessels dilate and circulation slows. Simple daily habits such as moving more, drinking enough water and raising your legs often bring real relief. If the feeling keeps coming back, a professional fluid retention protocol can help, but sudden or one-sided swelling always needs a doctor first.

Why your legs feel heavier when it is hot

In warm weather the body tries to cool down by widening the blood vessels near the skin. That is useful for releasing heat, but it also makes it harder for blood and lymph to travel back up from the legs against gravity. Fluid tends to collect in the ankles, calves and thighs, and by evening your shoes feel tighter and your legs feel tired.

Living in Mallorca, this is not a short-lived issue. Summers here are long, the heat often continues well into autumn, and the humidity on the coast does not help. Add long days on your feet, a flight or a long drive, and many people find their legs feel heavy for months rather than weeks.

Other factors that make it worse

Heat is the trigger many people notice first, but it is rarely the only one:

  • Sitting or standing still for long periods, whether at a desk, behind a shop counter or in a car.
  • Hormonal changes, for example around the menstrual cycle or pregnancy.
  • A salty diet and lots of processed food.
  • Not drinking enough water: oddly, being under-hydrated can make the body hold on to fluid.
  • Tight clothing around the waist or legs.
  • Little physical activity, which means the calf muscles do less of their natural “pumping” work.

Fluid retention is also closely linked to some types of cellulite, which is one reason the two are often treated together.

Everyday habits that help

None of these is a miracle on its own, but together they make a noticeable difference to how your legs feel at the end of the day.

A simple daily routine for heavy legs

  1. Start the day with a glass of water and keep a bottle with you, sipping regularly rather than waiting until you are thirsty.
  2. Move every hour or so. Stand up, walk, or do a few calf raises if you work at a desk.
  3. Walk whenever you can. A walk in the cooler hours of the morning or evening, or a walk along the shoreline with your feet in the sea, is ideal.
  4. Swim. Water supports the body and gently compresses the legs; the sea is one of the great advantages of living here.
  5. Choose fresh food with plenty of vegetables and fruit, and go easy on salt.
  6. Finish your shower with cool water, moving from the ankles upwards.
  7. Raise your legs for a while in the evening, resting them slightly higher than your hips.
  8. Avoid the hottest part of the day outdoors when you can, and steer clear of very hot baths or saunas when your legs are already swollen.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor promptly, before any aesthetic treatment, if you notice:

  • sudden swelling, especially in only one leg;
  • pain, warmth or redness in the calf;
  • swelling together with shortness of breath or chest discomfort (seek urgent care);
  • swelling that does not improve overnight or keeps getting worse;
  • visible changes in your veins or skin that worry you.

These signs can point to circulatory or other health problems that need medical assessment. An aesthetic treatment is never a substitute for that.

How our fluid retention treatment helps

When heavy legs are a recurring aesthetic concern and medical causes have been ruled out, our fluid retention treatment can support the work you are already doing at home.

The protocol uses Esaforesi, a needle-free technology from Coherence in San Marino that helps active formulations penetrate the tissue in a localised, controlled way. You can read more about how it works on our Esaforesi page. In practice:

  • No needles and no pain. Many people find the session a welcome moment of rest for tired legs.
  • No downtime: you can carry on with your day afterwards.
  • Sessions of 60 to 90 minutes, focused on the areas we agree on.

As always, we begin with a consultation: we ask about your habits, your health history and previous treatments, look at the tissue and record your starting point with photos and measurements. From there we design your plan, including the number of sessions, and review your progress as we go.

Because fluid retention and cellulite are so often connected, the plan may include our cellulite treatment. If localised fat is also a concern, it may be combined with body contouring.

What results to expect

Many people notice their legs feel lighter from the first sessions. The most lasting results come from a full course, followed by maintenance and, above all, by keeping up the habits above. Treatment and lifestyle work best together; neither does the job entirely on its own.

If you would like an assessment, you can book a consultation via Fresha or WhatsApp. Please bear in mind that treatments are carried out in Spanish.

Frequently asked questions

Why do my legs swell more in summer?

Heat widens the blood vessels, which makes it harder for fluid to return from the legs. Fluid tends to collect around the ankles and calves, especially after long periods of sitting or standing.

Does drinking more water help with fluid retention?

Usually, yes. When you do not drink enough, the body tends to hold on to fluid. Drinking regularly throughout the day, together with less salt and more movement, generally helps.

When is leg swelling a reason to see a doctor?

If the swelling is sudden, affects only one leg, comes with pain, warmth or redness, or with breathlessness, see a doctor straight away. The same applies if it does not improve overnight.

Is a fluid retention treatment painful?

No. Our protocol uses Esaforesi, which involves no needles. Most people find the session relaxing and go back to their day normally afterwards.
